Alternative Energy Sources

Alternative Energy Sources

By:

One of the major environmental issues which we have been concerned with since years is the depletion of our non renewable resources. Non renewable resources are basically like coal and so on which once used take thousands of years to form. Alternative energy sources help by providing energy instead of using up the non renewable sources for energy. And hence they do not use any sort of natural resources neither do they harm the environment.

Now there are various sources of alternative energy and you probably have heard of most of them. We have solar energy. This is where electricity is generated with the help of the sun's rays. These days a lot of things run on solar energy. You have the solar power generator, the solar cooker and so on. But there is a downside to this alternative energy. If there is no sun for quite a few days, then you will probably not get any energy. Also the solar energy devices take a longer time to heat up and hence generate electricity.

You also have wind energy. Here the wind power is used to generate electricity. There are various projects found all over the world where wind mills are set up in order to harness the electricity. Geothermal electricity is another type of alternative energy source. We know that the interior of the earth gives off steam or has hot water. In this type of energy, the hot water or even steam is used in order to heat up buildings. It is also used to generate electricity in some cases.

Also falling under the category of alternative energy sources is bio fuels and also ethanol. These are basically substitutes derived from plants. This type of energy is used in order to power up vehicles. Finally there is hydrogen. Which is basically used as a clean fuel in spaceships, airplanes and also in vehicles? Although this is considered as an alternative energy source there are various debates going on regarding the impact of hydrogen on the environment, negatively.

These days with the advancement in technology, various new concepts have been developed regarding these sources of energy and the horizon has widened. Alternative sources now include algae fuel. This is basically derived from algae and is a bio fuel. The best part about this algae fuel is that you can produce this on an industrial scale and the yield of oil is very high if you compare this with other types of bio fuels.

Another new alternative source is biomass briquettes which are basically the alternative to coal. Making this involves converting any sort of plant matter into composed briquettes. These briquettes have around 70 percent of the calorie value that coal has. Various countries in the world are currently producing these as an alternative to the rapidly depleting coal resources. Other examples include biological hydrogen production, biogas digestion and also floating wind farms (which are found in the middle of the ocean to harness the winds coming from the open sea).
