Alternative Energy Sources And What You Should Know About It

By:

Alternative energy is the energy derived from sources that do not consume natural resources or make harm to the environment. The term alternative presupposes a set of unwanted energy technologies against which alternative energies are contrasted. Controversies regarding dominant sources of energy and their alternatives have a long history.

In a common sense in contemporary society, alternative energy is that which is produced without the undesirable consequences of the burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon dioxide emissions, which is regarded to be the major contributing factor of global warming according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Very often, this less comprehensive meaning of alternative energy excludes nuclear energy.

The major sources of alternative energy are solar, wind, geothermal and other energies, each of them having their own advantages and disadvantages, including political, economical and practical issues. Alternative energy sources hold the key towards the future, without them, our planet will finally head into a blackout, or back to the middle ages.

Global warming is becoming a major threat than previously thought, and the melting of the ice shelves and more frequent and powerful natural storms are all signs that the earth can not take much more. Alternative energy sources do not emit to greenhouse gases like carbon which speed up global warming and make the problem worse like fossil fuels do. In addition alternative energy is renewable, which means it will never exhaust.

Alternative energy sources cannot be depleted, thus making it impossible for worldwide energy shortages to occur. This is one of the most important alternative energy benefits, because renewable energy will always be in adequate supply for mass use, and will not come to an end like fossil fuels. The sun, wind, tides, and other natural elements will continue to give the advantage. Removal of municipal solid waste, not only do the alternative energy advantages include eliminating massive amounts of garbage presently contaminating the earth, but they can also turn this garbage into a benefit via waste to energy plants.

Alternative energy sources do not depend on oil from foreign countries, which may often be politically hostile towards the U.S.

There are a numerous issues that would arise from switching to alternative energy. Raising the nations use of natural gas for electricity generation could result in anti economic consequences, especially since natural gas currently costs about four times more than coal. Moreover, if there were a widespread switching to natural gas from coal the United States would become increasingly dependent on international supplies. Large-scale fuel switching would require essential investments in pipeline storage and storage capacity and new terminals to process imported natural gas. There is also the question of whether to convert existing coal-burning plants or to build new ones. Burning natural gas at an existing coal plant would require a pipeline with the ability to meet the plants fuel supply requirements. Overall it would be more feasible and cost-effective to construct new natural gas units than to switch coal-burning plants.
