Wine racks are "shelves' that store wine. It helps keep them organized and away from any spilling or destroying of bottles easily. The reason why the racks are for placing bottles on the side, is to help keep the cork damp and prevent bubbles from forming. It helps the aging of the wine. But in modern day, racks are also used to display wine before consumption.

It is important to keep the wine in a temperature controlled environment, and some wine racks are similar to a refrigerator and do just that. They come in all shapes in sizes and can be found in a professional place or even in a home.

What is it made out of?

Numerous materials can be used for wine racks. The most common is wood and metal. Metal for the sides and holding part for the bottles. The wood may be used as a base shelf in between the sets of wine bottles. An all wood rack is common as well. Fir is a good wood to use due to its color and the durability. Other woods are uncommon because of the smell the wood gives off, which can infuse into the wine, creating a bad smell.

Metal racks can create a more unique rack. Most are just for decoration purposes and are only really used for short-term use of wine. Some wine racks are made out of steel, which is the best material for wine holding. It is able to hold more bottles than normal.

Types of Wine Racks

Some shelves are created for the bigger 250ml bottles of wine. Usually a durable wood like fir is used to hold the larger bottles and prevent from an uneasy shelf or broken bottles. Cubed shaped ones are quite common and just involve stacking of bottles, but be careful when taking them out, and not to let the others fall! Also, if there are different sizes of bottles, keep the largest bottles on the bottom, to save space and keep the bottles orderly.

Things to Know For Your Wine Rack

Make sure the area your wine rack is in is temperature controlled. Wine stored at above 69 degrees or so has a tendency to go bad. Some wine racks double as a refrigerator and help control the temperature, keeping it fresh. So do not keep it in a garage or a hot room, otherwise you risk spoiling. Its good to keep it in a dark place as well, if it is not in a wine fridge. If accessible, a wine basement is best as it keeps the area dark and away from any bad particles or damp area. It is good to keep accessories around for opening wine as soon at is taken out, keeping it fresh.

You can find wine racks at almost any retail store that would hold it. Places like Bed Bath and Beyond, and Pier One would be your best bet. The prices are pretty good and most likely will have a large selection as well as accessories to go with it. You can also find a private retailer who can customize your wine rack to your specifications and more to create an absolutely unique and everlasting look for your home.
