Years ago, the disabled and those in wheelchairs wouldnt have been able to get into a vehicle. They were simply stuck in their homes, which as you can imagine is not a great way to live. A wheelchair lift changed all of that. A wheelchair lift is simply a powered device or machine that was made to lift a wheelchair to a certain height, enabling it to get in and out of a van or other large vehicle easily. They are found on vans, busses and other large vehicles, and without them, many in wheelchairs would simply not be able to leave their homes for any reason.

Wheelchair lifts come in two different types, both usable for different purposes. The first type is what is known as a single arm lift and these are used when only side access is available on a particular vehicle. These are smaller and take much less room than the other type of lifts, which are called dual arm lifts. Dual arm lifts take up more room, but allow entry from both sides. They also hold up to 800 pounds, while single arm lifts will not lift nearly that same amount of weight. Youll find these in the back of the vehicle due to the amount of space that they take up.

There is an alternative to wheelchair lifts, and that is the use of wheelchair ramps. Usually less expensive, most wheelchair users also find these to be a safer alternative to lifts, which have been known to stick on occasion, leaving the user suspended in the air. Ramps are most often found on mini-vans. Many people will choose mini vans over full sized vans simply due to this fact. Ramps are generally less expensive, as well as more convenient. For many, these two reasons alone are enough to use ramps exclusively over lifts.

The wheelchair lift has certainly made the daily lives of those in wheelchairs much easier, and for many they would not be able to get out of the house without them. They have gotten better over the years, and will only continue to do so as time goes on.
