Loafers make the perfect shoes for those men who love to feel comfortable, but who also want to appear stylish too. For those of you who are unsure about what a loafer actually is, they are a type of shoe that slip on easily, have low-cut uppers meaning that they do not come above the ankle and which, in general, tend to come without buckles, laces, or Velcro. They are the easiest of shoes to put on, and require very little up keep, perfect for males looking to save themselves a little time when getting ready.

As a style of shoe, Loafers are extremely versatile, not only in the sense of comfort, but in a fashion sense too. They suit many different styles of clothing, and are suited to both a semi-formal and an informal setting. Stylistically, this style of footwear is probably the most variable, looking at home as much with a grunge look, as they do with a retro look. In recent years, they have become increasingly popular, particularly among younger men, being perfectly suited to the preppy look that seems to be the style of choice of university-aged men. All men should own at least one pair, and there are many styles from which to choose. Typically, manufacturers use leather or suede to make these shoes, although other fabrics are also popular, such as cotton.

There are many different styles of loafer available, but the most common styles are moccasin, penny loafers, and tasselled, here, we will consider each in turn.

Moccasins are the original loafer, they have been in existence for millennia, historians accredit the first pairs of moccasins to the Native Americans, and the name originates from the Algonquian, a Native American language. This style of shoe has come a long way from its humble beginnings, when the Native Americans constructed the shoes by hand, from leathers and the hides of other animals. Originally, moccasins where lined with rabbit fur, which kept feet warm in the, sometimes, freezing temperatures of North America. Today, we no longer use natural furs in the manufacturing of loafers, but we commonly see synthetic furs as a common feature of the shoes. Todays moccasins are perfect for wearing in colder climates, such as in the UK, and they prove exceptionally popular, particularly among older males.

The Penny Loafer is the preferred style of loafer of the younger generation, although they originate from the 1930s, our younger males consider them perfect for the retro look that is popular now. The Penny Loafer is easy to spot, because they have a strap across the top of the shoe, the purpose of these straps is purely decorative, but they produce a wonderful effect.

Tassel loafers are much more decorative than the moccasin and the Penny Loafer, because tassels around the shoe make for an added flair. This style of shoe is harder to pull-off as a stylistic imperative, and only the savviest of the fashionista should attempt to do so.
