In selecting the right OMC stern drive you have to avoid doing damage to your gearbox and to positively select gear. If you do hear a grinding or chattering noise when selecting either forward or reverse gear, something needs to change or one day your lower unit will not have any drive and it will constantly jump out of gear. Keep in mind that both of the output gears namely the forward and the reverses are rotating as they are in constant mesh with the pinion gear or the input gear.
