All About Including Your Pet In Your Wedding

By:

Most of us have had a pet that was our bosom companion at one time or another in life. But for a select few of us, those furry friends have been as near and dear as any human association we've ever had. For such people, it seems only natural to bring that critter into involvement in the most important day of their lives: their wedding! Trust me when I say that I understand the impulse, though unfortunately, it was an impossibility for me.

But if you're considering implementing Fido or Fluffy into your big day, then you could use a few tips from expert wedding planners who have dealt with this request in the past. Let me pass them along.

One of the best things you can do--several months before the scheduled date, ideally--is brush up on some training with your pup or kitty. As you can already guess, cats are going to be much more challenging to deal with, even if they have a mellow temperament, and you certainly can't count on them following directions, so the best you can probably do is ensure that your kitty consistently comes when called, so you can get him to walk down the aisle if you so desire.

Having your cat present throughout your reception may be problematic if 1) he is shy and will try to hide or claw materials such as curtains or furniture to get away, or 2) you have guests that are allergic. If you still want to have him close by, try to find a quiet room and a comfortable carrier in which to stow him away, where he will be less stressed by crowds and a strange environment.

No matter how well-behaved your dog has been over the years, a refresher course is always a good idea, and you may have to teach him new commands to get him involved in the way you envision. Many by-the-hour dog trainers will come to the location you designate, so you can ask him or her to visit you at the wedding venue to get your dog accustomed to the environment.

If your dog is unaccustomed to strangers and/or crowds, it's time to work on socialization. Consider bringing Fido or Fifi to your engagement party, bridal shower, and other major get-togethers for some quality exposure to rowdy groups.

Do you need to clothe your pet? Well, plenty of retail locations specialize in pet clothing, and you will be able to find dresses and tuxedos to fit your critter, regardless of his or her size. However, if you think this might be a little too cheesy, consider buying Swarovski collars to an extra-fancy touch--or you can buy a collar that features a bowtie.

You can bet there will be a few guests or family members to make fun of the idea, but hey--your pet is part of your life, and there's no reason he should be forgotten.
