All About Hearing Loss

By:

Though there are many different kinds of hearing losses, the conductive hearing loss and the sensorineural hearing loss are the most common of them. Most of those who have loss of hearing are suffering from this problem.

The conductive loss as the name indicates is a type in which the person will have a problem in the physical structure. Sound conduction to the ear is not possible because of this. Hearing impairment can occur in the person because of this. There are various conditions that can cause this kind of loss. The obstruction in the external ear is a major reason. The accumulation of wax is the most common reason for this to occur. When the wax plugs the ear, it will lead to this type of deficit.

Tympanic membrane damage can also cause this problem. The membrane may be ruptured because of the use of a finger or other material to clean the ear. Any infections in the ear or a loud explosion can also damage the tympanic membrane leading to loss of hearing.

Trauma to the ear can also lead to damage to the bones in the ear. The infection that is present in the ear or outside the ear can lead to permanent damage too. Each of these problems can lead to damage in the conduction system. When there is damage in this, it can cause the person to suffer from this problem.

The sensorineural hearing loss is mainly because of the damage that occurs to the nerves in the ear and the supporting structures. Any kind of trauma in the brain can lead to hearing loss, if the nerves associated with hearing are damaged. Barotrauma is the change in the ear pressure and this too can cause this problem.

Hearing loss can also be caused because of the side effects of some drugs. Some of the common drugs that can cause this kind of hearing loss include antibiotics, gentamicin or vancomycin and erythromycin are also commonly involved in this problem.

Though these are the two common types of hearing loss, the treatment that is given to them are not very effective once the damage in the ear has occurred. In most situations, the only option for them is to use a digital hearing aid or other kinds of hearing aids. This will help to amplify the sound and overcome the hearing deficit.
