All About Compost Bins

By:

Like many people, you're probably eager to lead an organic lifestyle. In addition to buying organic fruits and vegetables from your local market, you may even grow your own garden at home. To keep that garden healthy, you should steer clear of chemical fertilizers. A great way to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills - and to generate first-class fertilizer for your garden - is a compost bin.

What Is It?

it is a bin used to store organic waste. Over time, that waste degrades into rich compost, which can then be used to fertilize plants and flowers. You can buy pre-made compost bins, or you can easily build your own. Some people simply line an area with hay bales, placing their kitchen and garden organic waste inside; others build actual walls with wood or other materials. Ask your landscaper if he has any suggestions concerning these types of bins.

What Can You Put Into a Compost Bin?

You can turn all sorts of things into compost. Food scraps are good, especially raw fruits and vegetables. Raw eggs and coffee grounds are also welcome additions to a compost bin. If you have farm animals, manure can be placed into your compost bin to help speed up decomposition. Grass clippings are also a great way to do that. Small amounts of newspaper and other paper can be added, too; recycle larger quantities. Don't put metal, large pieces of cardboard, plastics or polythene in your compost bin - be sure to make it organic waste only

Getting It Started -

First, you need to find a suitable place for your bin. Experienced landscape gardeners will be able to point you in the right direction. The ideal spot will be in a place that's not too windy, and it won't be exposed to too much direct sunlight. At the same time, it should be a warm location. In the beginning, lay down a bed of straw; place a layer of topsoil over it. From there, you can begin adding scraps and other material to your compost bin. Be sure to keep things moist, but don't let them get waterlogged.

Tips and Advice -

If you have pets that go outside, make sure you always keep the bin covered up. The odours emanating from a compost bin are sure to pique the interest of a dog or a cat; however, the active bacteria that are found in the compost can be toxic to animals. Also, it's nice to keep your compost bin covered up, especially if you have neighbours nearby. In fact, you should always be very conscientious about not offending the neighbours with your composting habit. Still, a compost bin is one of the best ways to give back to the earth that nourishes all of us.
