All About Chiller Compressors

By:

There are many components of an air conditioning system work together to make the surrounding environment a comfortable temperature. Many might not understand exactly how these units work. In this article we are going to explain the different types of units.

While the units might work in a variety of different ways, the one thing they have in common is that they all rely upon chiller compressors. In the technical world, air conditioners and other types of cooling units are called chillers.

Chillers generally use a vapor compression cycle to cool the air to a desired temperature. The vapor compression cycle begins with some type of refrigerant or coolant, which is a liquid that absorbs heat. The refrigerant must first be compressed, then cycle throughout the system. This is why it plays such an important role in the system. If the refrigerant was not compressed, it would not have the power to circulate throughout the system, collecting and distributing heat.

They are divided into two types which are called dynamic chiller compressors and positive displacement chiller compressors. These two types account for the various methods of compression. All of the methods work well provided that they are used in the correct circumstances. Some of these units should be utilized for bigger jobs, others for smaller jobs, and some when energy efficiency is the top priority, and so on.

The major distinguishing characteristic of dynamic unit is their use of fans. Because it needs to work harder at some times and not so much at other times, it does not have to be running full force all of the time. By using fans, the speed at which the refrigerant circulates can be regulated without additional pressure on the compressor.

On the other hand, positive displacement units work with a completely different method. In positive displacement units, the compressors pump the refrigerant continuously. Because it never stops, it maintains a temperature much more evenly; however it does not have the option of resting like the dynamic chiller compressors.

The varieties of dynamic and positive displacement units include scroll chiller, reciprocating, and centrifugal. Each of these types function similarly with minor differences.

For example, reciprocating units utilize pistons which manipulate the refrigerant inside cylindrical structures. The pistons work to build up pressure which eventually causes the refrigerant to break free of the cylinder and circulate through the unit. These types of units are best used in a lesser capacity, and when used properly, offer efficiency and cost effectiveness.
