All About Allergy Testing

By:

If you suffer from an allergy, it usually manifests itself in spring and fall. And when someone's allergies flare up, the most common symptoms are labored breathing, coughing, sneezing and a congested respiratory system. And when someone has allergies, the most common recourse would be to either buy medicines on prescription or over the counter.

The most common allergies people suffer from are pollen and dust allergies, but there are many other allergens present in everyday life. Some are also allergic to cats, bees, wasps and certain foods such as dairy products, nuts and fruits. Medicinal allergies are also fairly common, for example allergies to penicillin. Most allergies are a basic periodical nuisance, but some can put your life in danger. One reason why people risk buying over the counter medicine is because they are not quite aware of the things they are allergic to.

On the other hand, visiting a doctor could allow you to be tested to find out what exactly makes you allergic and what can be done to control the symptoms. This accounts for about one third of all people known to suffer from allergies in their lifetime. But most of the time, this only happens when the pain and discomfort becomes too much to deal with on a daily basis - this line of thinking is unwarranted, because allergy testing is more accurate than it ever was and hassle-free for the most part.

If you plan to have yourself undergo an allergy test, there are three separate tests to go through. You would undergo a skin prick, patch test, and blood test. You don't have to spend much for these tests, which are quick and trouble-free. With the results you can obtain proper medication and/or avoid the cause.

You can get a lot of information right away from the skin prick test. Even the smallest babies can be tested via skin prick. There is a wide range of allergens that could be determined through the skin prick test. Each prick is mildly painful depending on your pain tolerance. You can wait for the results, usually available in about 20 minutes. To get more accurate and conclusive results, it is important not to take any anti-allergy medicine or antihistamines for about six weeks prior to testing.

The patch test begins when several common allergens are gathered and prepared on a metal plate. Once prepared, the discs would be placed on the back (or other parts of the body) and left on for about 2 days. These discs must be kept dry until test results are revealed and the discs are removed.

The most useful test for out-of-the-box and nontraditional allergens is the blood test. It also can be performed in the doctor's office with a small amount of blood drawn from a vein in the arm. The only drawback to this is a two-week waiting time for most results.

All tests should be interpreted by the doctor after a full review of the patient's history of allergic reactions. As a person gets older, there are so many things that can chance in your immune system. There is little need to take the tests unless you're willing to act on the results. Once the doctor advises you of what medicines to take or any therapy to undergo, you should follow the doctor's orders to keep your body allergy-free as soon as possible and moving forward.
