Alertness Is Crucial On The Roads

By:

With millions of drivers across the UK, its probably fair to say that the humble car has changed the lives of more people than perhaps any other innovation. Whether we use it to get to work, to drop the children at school or simply for enjoyment, there are many of us who simply couldnt imagine life without being able to motor around to their hearts content. The costs associated with motoring might have surged over the last decade, but that hasnt done much to dent Britains love affair with the car. However, there are thousands of accidents on the road every year. While the majority of them are relatively minor, some result in life-changing injuries.

Anyone whos been behind the wheel for any length of time will no doubt be able to reel off a long list of incidents where other motorists have behaved recklessly or thoughtlessly. Indeed, whilst the vast majority of drivers are conscious of the need to show consideration to their fellow road users, there will unfortunately always be a minority who display a cavalier attitude to safety. Whether theyre pulling out late at a junction, wandering aimlessly between motorway lanes or tearing around like lightning, its sometimes impossible to legislate for the actions of other drivers. Nevertheless, there are certain steps you can take to at least reduce the risk of causing or being involved in an accident.

Its drummed into us right from the moment we start learning to drive, but awareness really is of the utmost importance whilst driving on the roads. Keeping a close eye on what your fellow motorists are doing can make the difference between a collision and a near miss. It helps to minimise any potential distractions wherever possible so this means keeping background music to a reasonable level. Excessively loud music can make it harder to concentrate on your driving, which may mean you end up causing an accident of some description. There are a growing number of cars on the roads, which makes it all the more important to sharpen your observational skills.

It might seem like an obvious point to make, but there is a reason why there are speed limits in place. Many drivers, once theyve got a bit of experience under their belt, become somewhat complacent and start to think they can bomb around at whatever speed they like. This is a dangerous attitude to take to road safety, and has been the undoing of many a boy racer over the years. Treat the speed limit as a guide rather than a target, and youll be doing yourself and your fellow drivers a favour.
