Alcoholism, Addiction And Denial Management

Alcoholism, Addiction And Denial Management

By:

For many alcoholics and addicts, just admitting that they have a problem with drugs or alcohol is a monstrous and impressive first step toward recovery. But while this is a critical part of the overall Denial Management process, it is only the beginning of a process of self-exploration, self-discovery and the uncovering of truths that are often hidden deep in a persons psyche. Denial Management is a critical part of the initial treatment for alcoholism or addiction and an ongoing, lifelong part of a well-founded relapse prevention plan. Understanding denial and how it is managed is an essential part of this process.

Simply put, denial is part of what makes us human. We use denial as a tool- for better or for worse- to help cope with the stresses that we must deal with as we go through life. Sometimes denial begins as a result of painful events such as the loss of a family member, the end of a relationship, abusive situations, or other similar types of events. But when it comes to denial that is associated with addiction or alcoholism, the cause is almost always self-denial of some type. As people make mistakes or do things they regret in life, they tend to minimize the pain and embarrassment caused by poor or unlucky choices by denying the severity of the problem, denying their full or actual role in the situation and ultimately denying how they really feel about the problem. Consequently, denial becomes a way of life for addicts and alcoholics.

The only way that people suffering from substance abuse or alcohol problems can continue to actively use is through the rigorous application of denial, which is the true face of this condition. Everything about the disease of addiction is fraught with denial: addicts and alcoholics hide the existence of their problem, lie about the severity of it, steal, cheat and lie to cover it all up and lie to themselves about what the problem is really doing to their life. This is why admitting there is a significant problem and taking the first steps to get help is such a colossal achievement, but this is only the very beginning of denial management.

The goal of denial management is to professionally guide a person in exploring and helping to change the underlying concepts that feed and exacerbate problems like addiction and alcoholism. In order to accomplish this task the patient must understand how to make the distinction between reality and denial to not only recognize when denial is occurring, but to discover exactly what the denial is meant to obscure. All of this is accomplished with therapies that are a critical part of most inpatient, outpatient or partial hospitalization programs. These therapies are primarily individual, group and family therapy sessions. However, getting the best help at the right place can be a difficult task.

There are some rare instances of addiction treatment and alcohol rehab centers that offer all three of the previously mentioned types of treatment and therapies. For instance, Recovery First, a Florida drug rehab, offers a comprehensive inpatient treatment program, an intensive outpatient program, and a partial hospitalization or day/night program. Individual, group and family therapy are a principle part of the program at each treatment level. Comprehensive treatment facilities that concentrate on Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome and Denial Management using the most intensive types of therapy and treatment modalities are very rare in the United States, so research should be conducted in order to get the best treatment for substance abuse or alcohol dependence possible.
