Alcohol is high in calories and nutritionally those calories are completely empty. At first glance it is definitely not something that should be included as part of a healthy lifestyle. However, when you look a little deeper you will notice that a lot of fit and healthy people manage to incorporate it into their lifestyle. So can alcohol and fitness go together? In this article I expand on this topic and answer that question.

ALCOHOL IS FUN BUT IT IS NOT HEALTHY!

If you are reading this article then you probably agree that drinking alcohol is fun. It relaxes you, it improves your mood and it can make a night out a lot more enjoyable. However, 1 thing you need to understand is that alcohol is not good for you. It can lead to brain damage, cancer, organ failure, weight gain and much more. So whilst it is fun, drinking does inhibit your fitness goals.

YOU NEED TO COUNTER THE ADVERSE EFFECTS!

To ensure that alcohol does not have too much of an influence over your fitness goals, you need to offset the negative effects. There are 2 main ways you can do this.

First, make sure any alcoholic beverages you consume are as low in calories as possible. The calories in alcoholic drinks are completely empty. They do not provide your body with any nutritional value so the less calories that are in your drink, the better. Fortunately, there are low calorie beers and low calorie cocktails that you can take advantage of.

Secondly, make sure you stay physically active if you are going out drinking. If you drink a lot of alcohol calories then skip a workout too, it is having twice the impact on your fitness. However, if you stick with your exercise routine the calories you burn will partly cancel out the calories in the alcoholic beverages.

CAN ALCOHOL AND FITNESS BOTH BE PART OF YOUR LIFESTYLE?

Like everything else in a healthy lifestyle, alcohol and fitness can go together. You just need to make sure that it is only a small part of your lifestyle and that you are doing positive things to offset the negative effects. Drinking low calorie drinks, exercising regularly and making sure your consumption is moderate most of the time can all help you fit alcohol in. So by all means enjoy a few alcoholic drinks every week and even have the odd heavy night if you want. Just make sure you are not spending more time in bars than you do in the gym.
