Regarded as one of the earliest mosques in Singapore, Al-Abrar Mosque is situated in the heart of Chinatown, along Telok Ayer Street. This historic building was constructed in 1827 and holds great significance to the locals in the area, especially the Tamil Muslim immigrants who are referred to as the Chulias.
Symbolizing the immigration of Tamil Muslims from South India to Singapore, the Al-Abrar Mosque was initially a thatched hut. However, today it is a resplendent brick building, which reflects upon design elements that existed during the time. Having been declared as a national monument during 1974, the current building was established during the late 19th century. It is known by a number of epithets, including Chulia Mosque, Masjid Chulia and Kuchu Palli, which when translated means Small Mosque or Hut Mosque. Travellers are still able to capture its old-time charm, as its modest building is reflection of its original unassuming structure.
Strategically built to face the holy site of Mecca, deemed as the foremost sacred monument in Islam, Al-Abrar Mosque sprawls across a vast area of approximately 448.7 square metres. The architectural structure of the mosque integrates the five-footway design, reflecting a semblance to a row of shophouses. Although, it is not as ornate as the mosques that existed at the time, the prestigious mosque has a number of enthralling features, including simply designed minarets and minaret-styled towers. Flaunting a theme of Indian Islamic design elements, the mosque is most known for its Chatris, which is defined as an onion shaped dome. The mosques Chatris are placed in between each minaret. They also placed along the balustrade, which showcases intricate lattice work, shaped in a vent style. Reflecting Islamic character is the crescent moon and star that can be seen atop each minaret.
Having the capacity to hold an approximate of 900 people, the mosque underwent extensive renovation during 1986-1989. During this period, many additions were included to the structure including a large jack room, coloured glass French windows and a second storey, which is now occupied by the leader of the mosque known as the Imam. In addition, a gallery was included and the prayer hall was expanded.
