Air Flow Meter

Air Flow Meter

By:

An air flow meter (AFM) is a device used to measure the amount of air that passes through a tube. You may think it measures the actual amount of air that passes through the device but thats not it; instead, this apparatus measures the actual speed of the air flowing through the equipment in a particular time segment. Thus, it can be inferred that AFMs apply the concept of mass flow meters in a special medium and are, therefore, typically expressed in a unit measure of kilograms per hour (kg/h). Furthermore, these air flow indicators belong to a more general classification of flow meters. Flow meters are tools used in measuring the linear, nonlinear, mass or volumetric flow speed of a liquid, gas or vapor.

Air flow meters are usually found in cars and in some automobiles. These meters measure the quantity or amount of air entering into the internal combustion engine, thus, helping to calculate how much fuel is needed to be injected into the cylinder ports. There are different kinds of air flow meters such as the vane air flow meter and the Karmen vortex which are older flow meter styles. Different types of air flow meters usually have different shapes making them easy to identify. Newer and more common than the two mentioned is the mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor). The MAF sensor consists of a thermistor (measures the incoming air temperature), a platinum hot wire (maintained at a constant temperature relative to the thermistor), and an electronic control circuit (compensates the temperature by sending more current to the hot wire).

There are numerous available manufacturers of air flow meters out there. You just have to consider some few reminders before choosing the right meter that is fitted to your needs. The very first thing you should consider is its size. If you have an engine which makes enough room for a huge amount of horsepower that allows larger injectors, an air flow meter that is not large enough will only limit your engines power. On the other hand, a flow meter that is too large can make aberrations on its own resolution and accuracy. You should choose the most appropriate size of air meter for your engine. Another thing that you might consider is the calibration of the flow meter. Well calibrated air flow meters match the flow rating of the fuel injectors. Also, if you have never used devices like this before, you may also consider a flow meter that generates digital output rather than analog output.

There are varieties of air flow meters available but if you have a meager knowledge about these things, you can always ask the help of experts. Never hesitate to ask because the technical nature of air flow meters is important and can be very crucial.
