Aging: Do You Want To Be The Tortoise Or The Hare?

Aging: Do You Want To Be The Tortoise Or The Hare?

By:

Do you remember when you were a child and having to wait a whole hour for something seemed like an eternity? When you couldn't wait for school to get out and three more months just felt like it may as well be forever? I know I do. I also remember my elders admonishing me "Just you wait: the older you get the faster time goes!" Come to think of it, none of us believed a word of it until we experienced the phenomenon for ourselves. But is it really true or does it just seem that way? Maybe it's both!

There are a few theories floating around that may help explain this marvel. In logical and mathematical terms, we know that time goes by exactly the same for everyone. But for the older folks (of which I don't claim to be among quite yet), the term 'Don't blink or you'll miss it' rings more true every day.

One of the theories regarding the speed of aging has to do with the scientific and intimidating facts about human DNA. As we age, all of the cells in our bodies become progressively laden with toxic accumulation, and various factors from our present day hectic lifestyle (think EMF pollution) can lead to DNA mutations.

Since our bodies are constantly producing new cells, and the DNA replicates itself each time, if there are poisons or compromised DNA in our cells, the result will be the increased degeneration of the next round of replicated cells. And this deterioration is what we commonly refer to as aging. This is also referred to as the Somatic Mutation Theory.

Couple this with the undisputed fact that body processes slow down as we age, e.g., metabolism, elimination, recovery from stress, and you can see why on a cellular level, things start to slide as it gets more and more hard for the body to keep up with these demands. Unhealthy cells creating that many more unhealthy cells only compound as time goes on.

As our bodily processes including our mental faculties and thought processes slow down, what used to take only a few minutes might take twice as long, leaving us only able to get half as much done in a day. We end up scratching our head and asking "Where did the day go, anyway?"

Fortunately, this slowing and deterioration that we speak of is not entirely inevitable. There are many things that can be done to slow and even reverse the aging process. And no, it's not in the next miracle pill or potion touted on a late-night infomercial. Instead, the idea is to give your body the most optimal nutrition possible-raw fruits and vegetables.

An ever growing number of people who have gradually changed over to the raw diet, simply by incorporating more and more raw foods, have experienced remarkable results. Not only does the raw food diet cleanse toxins from the cells and keep those oh-so-important DNA strands healthily reproducing themselves, but also it leads to overall improvement in your health which can help prevent your bodily processes from slowing and deteriorating at the rapid pace that the cooked food crowd has to suffer.

A clean, healthy body will not tolerate a dull, slow mind. In Tonya Zavasta's book "Raw Foods and Hot Yoga", she refers to this problem as the 'cooked food stupor' that people need to be delivered from. The raw food diet can definitely go a long way in waking us all up to a much higher level of energy and clarity; hence, our perception changes and life no longer just passes us by while we strive to keep up.

While this article only scratches the surface of the benefits of the raw food diet, there are many more resources available. Three helpful web resources which specifically focus on the anti-aging effects of the raw food diet are: http://rawfoodists.blogspot.com, http://rawfoodme.wordpress.com, and http://kaboodle.com/rawfood
