If you want to choose hair extensions to boost your current look, what kind are the best? There are many types of afro hair extensions to help you increase volume and length, but with such a wide variety, how do you know which ones are best for you?

Afro hair extensions provide many benefits. They can offer you a change from your natural hair and give you amazing results in an instant, but each type of afro hair extensions comes with its own pros and cons. To understand afro hair extensions better and to decide for yourself, here are a few types with their advantages and disadvantages.

Weaves: these are a popular choice and can be sewn onto your real hair. The stylist or hairdresser cornrows your hair and attaches the weave with thread which ensures that it stays on firmly. Weaves arrive in a wide variety of styles, lengths and colors and they are quite affordable. However you need to dedicate time to the application process and understand that the hair wont last forever and must come off at some point. Also, your natural hair cant be washed and some scalp irritation is possible.

Braids: your natural hair is braided and the extensions are added to those braids to create more length. These extensions are very easy to remove and are extremely low maintenance because no brushing, combing or additional styling is required. Your hair is additionally exposed letting you wash it and the extensions without any trouble. The process may be time-consuming and it could hurt during the first night but it is still an affordable option.

Wigs: these are worn over your natural locks and consist of hair attached to a net that stretches to fit your scalp. These are the easiest extensions to wear and you can try them on before purchasing to ensure that the look suits you. You can also choose to have a different style each day if you decide to buy more than one. One of the problems is that the hair cannot be attached to your real hair or scalp and can come off.

Lace fronts: similar to wigs but these can be attached to your head with glues. The glue is applied to the skin, not your hair and the wig is then attached. This way it can be firmly applied and you wont have to worry about the hair falling off. It does need constant maintenance though and it can be pretty pricey.

Made your decision?
