Affiliate Marketing: Where Should The Affiliate Direct His Efforts?

By:

Successful affiliates devote most time to search engine optimization (SEO) activities. It takes time and effort to get adeqaute numbers of high quality backlinks to their websites. As affiliates operate in competitive markets, the quantity of backlinks required to gain high search ranks for important keywords is high. Hundreds of backlinks for keywords that are less competitive may be enough. For competitive keywords, several thousand backlinks may be required. This is why affiliates need to target the less competitive keywords by adopting a niche market approach.

The more ambitious the affiliate, the more work he neeeds to apply to SEO. If he is working on his own, it will take him two or three years of full-time work to get high search ranks for the more competitive keywords. He can reduce this time by paying for SEO, but it does not come cheap. If he employs an SEO company, there is significant financial risk attached, as his website promotions will have to deliver an excellent return to meet his costs.

It should now be evident that SEO, even where less competitive keywords are targeted, requires considerable work. How can the affiliate most effectively undertake search engine optimization?

The starting point is to be aware of which activities are important to SEO. Both on-website and off-website activities are important. The off-site activities have the greatest impact on search rank.

On-site SEO includes displaying important keywords at around 4% density, use of keywords in title and meta tags, use of keywords in page URLs, having at least 200 words per page, a minimum page count of 30, and constantly refreshing content.

Off-site SEO involves getting high quality backlinks form other websites. Important keywords should be used in anchor text of these links. The backlinks need to come from websites with non-zero Google PageRanks, via links that are not renedered ineffective for SEO purposes due to nofollow commands. As well as requesting links form other websites, the affiliate can create his own links on forums, blogs, social networks, link directories and article directories.

Failure to adequately address SEO is a common reason for failure as an affiliate.
