Advice On How To Care For Silk Ties

By:

Here are a few general rules for taking good care of your fine silk neckties. Men usually get very much attached to certain neckties that they own, so knowing how to care for them the right way is imperative to ensure that these pieces of art not only look presentable but will also last for a long time to come.

Some people consider neckties a mans secret blankie, and a lot of men have become quite attached to their collection. Especially ties that were given as a gift are hard to replace.

At Night
Do not leave the knots in as this will permanently crease the fabric. Always hang your neckties at night over a hanger or specially made tie rack.

When Travelling
When travelling, use any of these methods to make sure that your neckties are kept in a good condition.
When you pack gently fold the tie along the center twice, and put it in the inside pocket of your suit jacket. Another option is to roll your necktie up with the seam facing inwards. Then take this roll and place it inside your dress shoes.

Once you get to your destination, hang the necktie in the bathroom door before you shower. The steam will straighten any wrinkles in the fabric.

Stain Prevention
Some neckties are made with a blocking agent and they are advertised as such, but generally, you should tuck a napkin in your shirt collar to prevent staining in your neckties.

Dry Cleaning
Neckties nust not be dry cleaned. Dry cleaners will typically press the tie, which will flatten out those nice rolled edges. The necktie will fall out of shape and will just not look right anymore.

Spot Removal
Not much can be done with a spot on a nice looking silk necktie. But in case you happen to get a spot on your tie, you may simply dip a clean cloth in a small amount of seltzer or club soda, and then carefully dap the cloth onto the stain. For something greasy, a sprinkling of talcum powder may do the trick. Put in as soon as possible and allow it to absorb what it can, then brush of the residue with a clean cloth after a few hours.

Tie Tacks
Tie tacks have become much less popular in recent years. The purpose of the tie tack or tie chain was to keep the tie closer attached to the shirt. If you are a fan of tie tacks, then avoid those that are pinned through the fabric of the tie. The pin can pull out an individual silk thread. If this happens the tie is damaged. Instead use tacks that slide over the tie or attach at the back of the tie.

Re-shaping and Conditioning
Mens most favored ties usually get most used and it is suggested that a small hand steamer be purchased to gently steam away the wrinkles that form around the fabric where the knot is tied. This may be done at least every two month, which assuming the tie is used about eight times in that period.

Conclusion
Taking proper care of your tie collection will ensure that your ties will last a long time.
