By:

Dartmouth - Devon County is a wonderful town to visit. This is especially true for those who are interested in history. It is located on the Dart River and is a well-known sailing port. Its history shows it was a sailing point for the crusades of 1127-1190. Later it was a major base for pirateering. It is interesting that the pirates were licensed by the king to conduct their pirate activities. It is home of the Royal Navy training college and all of their officers are trained there.

The town can be reached by personal boat, three ferries or by a bridge that is eleven miles away. There are three ferries called the Higher Ferry, the Lower Ferry and the Passenger Ferry. The Passenger Ferry carries only people and is used mainly as a connecting point with the steam railway at Kingswear station. The other two ferries carry automobiles. These automobiles can be left in the park and ride area where transportation is provided into town and allows for exploration without heavy traffic.

The mild climate of the area makes it a pleasure to ride on the upper deck of the ferry and enjoy the view. As the ferry progresses toward the dock one has a beautiful view of the town with its high cliffs in the background. Roaming through the dock area there a number of interesting shops to explore.

Many delightful restaurants serve gourmet meals that will satisfy even the most discriminating food connoisseur. One restaurant of particular interest is a railway station restaurant even though there is no railway in the town. At one time, there was a plan for one and the station was built but the railroad plans were not completed.

For people who are into boating the deep port and adjoining businesses, which line the docks, are a delight. Being able to sail one's boat into the harbor, tie up and then proceed to explore the town is an adventure in itself. The businesses on the dock are geared to supply any boater's needs.

For the visitor who would like to stay for a while and enjoy the area and its events there are very good accommodations. There are hotels, bed and breakfast and guesthouses as well as places for those who wish to camp out.

There are three excellent beaches as well as adventure parks and other places to explore. Events such as the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta are always enjoyable. With its mild weather, Dartmouth is a must on anyone's itinerary.
