Advantages And Disadvantages Of Being In An Open Relationship

By:

Open relationships are a controversial subject for many people. Psychologists agree that an open relationship will eventually destroy the foundations of what sustains a committed relationship. An open relationship is when two people agree to have extramarital affairs without being accused of committing infidelity. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of an open relationship.

No guilt

Marriage has long been a symbol for uniting two people as one flesh, so if a person were to commit infidelity, the other partner would be extremely hurt, and the person who committed the act would feel guilty. In an open relationship, the partner already expects their significant other to sleep with other people; therefore, there would be no guilt and hurt. This could be seen as an advantage or a disadvantage.

No jealousy

Women are known for having jealous tendencies. If a woman's significant other flirts with other people, she may feel very jealous. In an open relationship, jealousy can't be justified because the two people agreed to see other people. This, just like the previous point, can also be seen as either an advantage or disadvantage.

No unfairness

Men are known for being polygamous. An open relationship creates equality by allowing the woman to also be polygamous. This is mostly seen as an advantage; however, many women don't feel the need to sleep with other people after they commit to an exclusive relationship. Most women commit acts of infidelity due to irregular circumstances.

No empty feelings

Sometimes, a person can't provide everything that their partner wants in a relationship. This could be emotional support, financial support, sexual pleasures, or protection. An open relationship gives people the opportunity to find someone else to compliment what their partner lacks. However, some people accept their partner's imperfections, and they would not want to find someone else to compliment their partner. Therefore, this can be seen as either an advantage or disadvantage.

Even though these may seem like great reasons to be in an open relationship, there are other reasons why it is not great to be in an open relationship.

Loneliness

In an open relationship, a person may not feel as loved as they would in an exclusive relationship. The constant yearning for true affection may eventually dissolve the open relationship and cause psychological scars.

Emotional heartache

If a person agrees to an open relationship just because their partner wants one, then emotional heartache can set in. There needs to be a mutual agreement between both people to avoid emotional distress.

Lack of communication

An exclusive relationship needs communication to survive; however, in an open relationship there is no pressure to keep the relationship alive, so communication is not needed. Many people need to feel that open line of communication to feel loved, and they will not find it in an open relationship.

These are some advantages and disadvantages to an open relationship. Remember, it is important to think about whether this is a decision you want to make.
