Advancement Opportunities In The Retail World

By:

Retailers are on the hunt for employees who are not only good at the position they're hired for, but have a natural talent for other career options within the industry.

Marketing

If you work with a clothing or fashion retailer, there's a big chance that you'll routinely be doing marketing projects on the sales floor. These tasks will include anything from dressing mannequins to styling wall units full of shirts, pants, sneakers, and accessories. Senior management generally has an idea of what they want, but they're willing to let store associates be creative if they can find a better, and more attractive, way to market the product.

If you find that marketing is your specialty -- perhaps you know just where to install promotional signs in order to catch the most customer traffic -- store managers and district managers will likely want to turn your skill into a long-term career . Each store has marketing managers, which in turn can advance into regional management positions and even positions at the company's headquarters.

Sales

Any retail store manager can attest to the fact that it isn't easy to find a true sales professional. It's not meant to sound offensive; many people simply don't have a personality that lets them be effective in a high-stress job that requires strong persuasion skills and patient persistence.

A true sales professional who has what it takes can turn their position into a store management position, an employee training position, or even a regional sales opportunity. When retailers find someone who really makes sales happen, they want to keep them around for the long term.

Management

Still others are at their best when managing other employees and helping to run the store's most basic and essential operations. Natural managers have a knack for translating the store's needs to employees in a way that inspires and motivates them to complete all of the required tasks. They do this without causing conflict or a low employee retention rate.

If this is your niche, advancement in retail will be a breeze. Senior management routine turns successful store managers into successful regional managers. From there, opportunities exist for successful managers to advance into positions at the company's headquarters and put their skills to use in entire departments.

No matter what your strengths are, a retail job is a fertile ground for promotion and advancement. Know what it is that you do well, and then do it to the best of your ability -- every time. You'll be surprised at just how far you'll go.
