Advanced Imaging Technology Improves Treatment, Recovery Times for Cancer Patients

By: VantageOncology

Getting rid of cancerous tumors has never been much of a problem for doctors. The problem is in killing or removing the cancer without doing the same to the patient. Radiation therapy has long been among the best treatments for cancer. Radiation destroys the cancer tissue, but it also damages healthy tissue. Furthermore, since exposure to excessive radiation increases the odds of getting cancer, cancer treatment can actually be the cause of a reoccurrence of cancer.

Since the beginnings of radiation therapy, focusing the radiation exclusively on cancerous tissues and avoiding exposure to healthy tissue has been a goal that radiation oncology has always strived for. The more a radiation oncologist is able to avoid radiation exposure to healthy tissue, while focusing larger amounts of radiation on cancerous tissue, the higher the survival rate becomes and the lower the side effects of treatment.

Image Guided Radiation Therapy, or IGRT, is a relatively new technique that allows a radiation oncologist to track and pinpoint tumor location right before a treatment session starts, allowing for a much more precisely administered dose of radiation to be delivered. IGRT utilizes imaging equipment such as CT (computed tomography), ultrasound, or stereoscopic x-rays to precisely locate a tumor prior to administering radiation therapy. Minimizing time between locating a tumor and
treating it is vital, as tumors can move or change shape over time.

As treatment progresses and the tumor shrinks and changes shape, IGRT is able to indicate these changes, allowing radiation oncologists to recalibrate delivery of radiation, thereby maximizing effectiveness and minimizing collateral damage to healthy tissue.

IGRT is the latest imaging technology in radiation oncology that strives to improve to the point that cancerous cells can be identified in real time and be treated simultaneously, allowing for higher radiation doses, thereby reducing treatment times, increasing survivability, and minimizing or eliminating side effects.

Believe it or not, not all cosmetics are safe. Safe cosmetics are, in fact, hard to find. How can this be? Why in the world would the cosmetics that you use be dangerous? Surely the FDA regulates anything we use in or on our bodies to make sure that they are safe for us to use? Sadly, no.
  • Keeping Your Gums Healthy So You Can Avoid A Trip To A Periodontist By: Christine OKelly - Estimates show that almost 75% of adults over the age of 40 suffer from gum disease. There is a huge lack of knowledge when it comes to this condition, how it develops, the different forms of treatment, and the repercussions of not seeking treatment. Many people are not usually even aware they have gum disease. When neglected, gum disease can negatively affect a person's health and can cause the loss of teeth. This article explores this condition, including some common myths about it.
  • What is Occupational Therapy By: Robert Melkonyan - Occupational therapists believe that there is a relationship between occupation, health and well-being. Findings from studies over the years indicate that occupation has an important influence on health and well-being. Ranging from physiological to functional outcomes, it is clear that the performance in everyday occupations is an important part of everyday life. Withdrawal or changes in occupation for a person have a significant impact on a person’s self-perceived health and well-being.
  • Laser Dentistry -- The Tools And Techniques Of A Cosmetic Dentist By: Christine OKelly - Around the world, cosmetic dentist professionals use the non-invasive and practical laser to provide dental treatments to their patients. Lasers can be used efficiently for a variety of treatments as they can easily and gently modify both the hard substances and the soft tissue of a patient's mouth. How A Laser Works Lasers, short for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, project a highly concentrated form of energy. The energy reacts with the moisture of the gums, teeth, or bones to build up steam underneath the surface to cut or burn the area being treated.
  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber And Wound Healing By: Paul Fitzgerald - Hyperbaric oxygen therapy clearly stated as a treatment mode in which the patient is completely enclosed in a pressure chamber breathing oxygen at a pressure greater than one atmosphere. Breathing 100% oxygen at one tmosphere or applying oxygen outside a pressurized chamber are not considered hyperbaric oxygen. Hyperbaric oxygen chamber is a process in which only one patient is placed and pressurized oxygen is applied into the chamber. Access to the patient is made from he outside via ports and pass-through. In a hypoxic environment, wound healing is halted by decreased fibroblast proliferation collagen production, and capillary angiogenesis.

There are only a few occasions in life with memories that last longer than the bride and groom's memories of their wedding day. While a bride's dress, makeup, hair, and skin play a role in creating a perfect, graceful, and elegant presentation for the day, a stained or missing tooth can disrupt this beautiful impression. When immortalized in wedding pictures, imperfections in a bride or groom's smile will literally last for a lifetime.

Diabetes causes sensitivity to bacteria, which can lead to infections and oral health issues. The 12 to 14 million people suffering with this disease must make an extra effort to keep a close eye on their dental health. Possible Oral Health Problems For Diabetics Diabetic patients often suffer from sensitivity to bacteria and infections, which cause many of the issues a dentist discovers. The most common problems are bone and gum infections.
  • The Science and Physiology Behind Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy By: Paul Fitzgerald - Using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, much greater amounts of oxygen are able to be diffused into the body. HBO works because of the physical properties of gases under pressure, specifically, oxygen at pressure greater than 1 atmosphere. Oxygen is essential in a variety of enzymatic, biochemical, and physiologic interactions that promote normal cellular respiration and tissue function. Mono-oxygenase, intradioxygenase, and interdioxygenase are specific enzymes that recruit oxygen as a cofactor to perform required biologic processes. Collagen deposition and synthesis depend on an oxygen-dependent prolyl-hydroxylase hydroxylation of proline. Angiogenesis and epithelization also are oxygen dependent. Under normal conditions, 97.
  • Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy By: Paul Fitzgerald - My husband suffered strokes in August 2006 that resulted in total loss of short-term memory, slurred speech, and difficulty walking. The doctors said he may never recover, and if he did it would take at least two years. Now, after only two months of hyperbaric therapy his memory is back, and his speech and walking are normal. His energy has improved. Conditions that harm the brain have a wide reach. Whether from a stroke (vascular accident) or a traumatic brain injury, the results impair the whole family.
  • 10 Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy By: Paul Fitzgerald - Hyperbaric medicine, also known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the medical use of oxygen at a higher than atmospheric pressure. Hyper means increased and baric relates to pressure. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) refers to intermittent treatment of the entire body with 100-percent oxygen at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. The earth's atmosphere normally exerts about 15 pounds per square inch of pressure at sea level. That pressure is defined as one atmosphere absolute (1 ATA). In the ambient atmosphere we normally breathe approximately 20 percent oxygen and 80 percent nitrogen.
