By:

Whats exciting about advances in dental care techniques is that now adults have more options than before available to them for straightening their teeth and improving their smiles. If you are considering treatment options to enhance your smile, this collection of frequently asked questions will be of benefit to you.

What are invisible braces and what do they do?

Invisible braces are devices installed by a dentist or orthodontist that straighten teeth that are misaligned. They are called invisible braces because they are constructed of clear or natural tooth colored material. Invisible braces can also be installed behind teeth, on the tongue side so they are not visible from the front. Although the invisible braces are not completely invisible, their visibility to others is limited.

Will my insurance pay for adult orthodontics?

Generally speaking insurance companies do not pay for cosmetic devices. Nor do they pay for strictly cosmetic or elective procedures. But, under certain conditions insurance companies may be pay for orthodontic devices. If misaligned teeth, or dental problems are creating medical symptoms and the orthodontic device is necessary as part of treatment, then benefits may be paid.

How long will I have to wear braces to straighten my teeth?

That is a hard question to answer, because so many variables can affect the amount of time a person will need to wear braces. Only a general estimate can be given. If fixed braces are needed then from one to three years will be required to straighten teeth properly. Part of the time the braces will need to be worn on the teeth every day, and part of the time a retainer can be used only at night.

Are porcelain veneers more suitable for repairing damaged teeth, then crowns?

Under some circumstances porcelain veneers would be more appropriate to repair a damaged tooth, over a crown. Of course it would depend on the extent of the damage to the tooth. If a chip or crack is the damage to be repaired, a veneer may be fine. But, if a tooth is considerably damaged, and has been weakened, then a crown may be more suitable. Your dentist can make the best determination based on your situation.

Is wearing braces uncomfortable, or painful?

Wearing braces at times can be uncomfortable, anyone who has worn them will attest to this fact. But keep in mind what the braces are attempting to do, move your teeth along the gum line. This may produce periodic episodes of discomfort, and pain, but it will not be permanent. If you are experiencing consistent pain, and discomfort, a problem may exist. You should contact your orthodontist who is in the best position to ease your discomfort.
