Acuvue, Bausch & Lomb And Ciba Vision: A History Of Three Companies

By:

When you're looking for contact lenses, the range of choice can be enormous. Names such as Acuvue, Bausch & Lomb and Ciba Vision dominate the market. Which is best? Well, working on the basis that knowledge is power, this article will look at the background of these companies to see how that impacts on their service.

Acuvue is one of the largest contact lens manufacturers in the world. It constitutes around 13% of Johnson & Johnson's Medical Device business (2008) which made it about 5% of Johnson & Johnson's business as a whole.

The company started life however as a small American brand owned by the Frontier Contact Lens Company. The soft contact lens is now a core product line of all of the major contact lens manufacturers in the world and was an invention of the late fifties but did not receive approval in America till the seventies. So when Acuvue started life in the fifties it manufactured hard contact lenses. The company quickly moved into the soft contact lens market in the seventies with a new material under the trade name 'etafilcon A'. At that time, the process of manufacturing contact lenses was still highly manual and so Johnson & Johnson acquired the Acuvue brand in the eighties with the intention of making the operation more efficient.

Bausch & Lomb meanwhile has been in the optical care industry since the 1900s. Its roots though go all the way back to the mid 19th century when a German immigrant, John Jacob Bausch opened up a good store. He needed investment to make it grow, and found a willing partner in Henry Lomb. The business grew progressively to become the enormous conglomerate it is today.

Ciba Vision meanwhile is a much more modern corporation. It began in 1980 - a baby in comparrison - and has been at the forefront of development in eye care ever since. It is a young company and so trades on its reputation for innovation.

So there you have it: Acuvue, Ciba Vision and Bausch & Lomb. Three highly reputable companies with three different pasts. Perhaps that matters to you. Some consumers are highly interested in provenance and the origin of a company and its product can be of profound importance. Others are more interested in the product.

If this is the case you're ranking the range of Acuvue products such as the recently launched Trueeye using its Oasys technology, against its competitors. This is an extremely comfortable and functional one day disposable option. Whichever you choose do some research before hand. Find which option is best and which is most likely to serve your needs. Customer reports on the internet can be extremely useful as can word of mouth from friends or work colleagues. Indeed, this is the most valued form of marketing for any company.
