A barrier island off the coast of North Carolina, Hatteras is home to an array of wonderful activities. From its coastal waters to its pristine beaches to its laid back community inland, Hatteras Island is a paradise for outdoor and nature lovers as well as those who just want to relax. A large amount of water and outdoor recreational activities, fishing, and simply exploring what else this island has to offer will keep almost anyone entertained.

With about 60 miles of shoreline, one of the best things to do on Hatteras Island is to go to the beach. At the beach you will find plenty of things to do whether you are looking for leisure or adventure. Enjoy one of the beaches many leisure activities such as sitting back and relaxing as you soak up some sun, strolling the beach, flying a kite, shelling, or watching the sunset or sunrise. If you are looking for something more exhilarating almost every watersport of every kind takes place off the coast of Hatteras. Many outfitters in the area provide equipment for ocean kayaking, surfing, scuba diving, wind surfing, sailing, and jet skiing. You can even get a whole new view of the island because many of the outfitters offer the thrilling experience of parasailing. Ranked as the #4 Best Beach in America by Dr. Beach, Hatteras Island's beaches offer a wealth of things to do.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina are well known for providing an excellent fishing experience. Many travel to the Outer Banks for no reason other than to cast their line in the areas waters and Hatteras Island is one of the best places to do so. One of the most popular places for surf fishing on the East Coast, the area is also excellent for pier fishing. During the fall, red drum, striped bass, and blue fish are popular catches, while the summer brings in flounder, trout, sea mullet, and pompano. If you looking for the big catch there is plenty of offshore fishing to make your dreams come true. Hundreds of blue marlin, white marlin, and sailfish are caught in Hatteras waters during late spring to early fall. Depending on the charter you choose there is also a chance to catch Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, grouper, sea bass, and cobia. Before you head out, be sure to check out North Carolina's fishing rules and regulations.

You may find you want to spend a lot of time at the beach, but don't forget to explore the rest of the island. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has warned sailors of Hatteras dangerous Diamond Shoals or shallow sandbars since 1868. A journey up the lighthouse's 248 steps ends in spectacular views of the island. With about 1000 known shipwrecks due to the Diamond Shoals, the area is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum as well as the Frisco Native American Museum are great places to explore while on Hatteras Island. Spread throughout the island there are also plenty of locally owned shops offering their own unique merchandise. Check them out and find a new treasure to take home with you.
