What Causes Acne?

There is not an alone factor that causes acne. Dermatologists describe that when the sebaceous glands (the oil producing glands under the skin) start producing excessive oil (sebum) during adolescence, acne appear. The adrenal glands of both males and females produce such hormones that arouse the sebaceous glands to produce excessive sebum. Although the sebum lubricates and protects the skin by getting secreted through openings in the skin, but dead skin cells near the openings get mixed with sebum and block the apertures. As a result, skin gets a build up of oil just under it and bacteria love it. They get in huge number in their favorite environment and inflame the tissues. Pimple is the result of this very inflammation if happens close to the skin surface. A whitehead is the result of the breakout of sebum onto the skin surface. The same surfaced sebum in the form of a whitehead, if gets oxidized, it changes its color from white to black, and it is called blackhead.
