Acid/alkaline Diet: It's All About Balance

Acid/alkaline Diet: It's All About Balance

By:

Have you ever wondered if theres a common cause of disease? Many doctors and nutritionists believe that the explanation may come down to three words: acid/alkaline imbalance.

Let me explain further. Our blood is slightly alkaline, with a normal pH level around 7.4. So, for optimal health, we strive to maintain a pH balance of 7.4 or higher.

Any numbers below 7.4 indicate that we have entered a state of acidity. If our bodies are acidic, it means that they must rob our organs and bones of vital minerals, like calcium, potassium, and magnesium, in order to neutralize the acid and remove it from the body. Over-acidity weakens the bodys defenses and can cause cells to die prematurely.

So, the answer to staying healthy starts with eating an acid/alkaline balanced diet, and that means knowing which foods are acidic and which foods are alkalizing.

Its no surprise that the typical western diet is acid-forming and that the foods you consume several times a day are likely the ones you should be avoiding. They include coffee, sugar, meat, dairy products, and processed foods.

On the other hand, foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and seeds have an alkaline pH and are desirable to promote alkalinity in the body.

The logical way to maintain an acid/alkaline balanced diet would be to consume more fruits and vegetables, and to cut back on meats, sweets, and processed foods. But, it doesnt mean getting rid of all acidic foods. It simply means consuming both acid and alkaline foods in a manner that encourages optimum health.

Knowing how to maintain an acid/alkaline balanced diet may be confusing at first, but a good rule of thumb is to use the 80/20 rule: maintain a ratio of 80% alkalizing foods and 20% acidic foods.

This means that four-fifths of your diet should contain alkaline-forming foods and one-fifth should contain acid-forming foods.
