Acid Reflux And The Symptoms Of Acid Reflux To Watch Out For

By:

When stomach acids reflux abnormally into the esophagus, this leads to the condition known as acid reflux. A lot of people experience this condition especially after eating and it can be downright uncomfortable and painful. This article discusses acid reflux and the symptoms of acid reflux to watch out for.

When we eat food, the food is broken down in the body using various stomach acids and gastric acids. When normal digestion occurs, the food is transmitted by the digestive muscles into the intestines to enable greater digestion of the food.

For people who suffer from acid reflux, the stomach contents which become acidic are pushed back into the esophagus leading to inflammation associated with having this condition. Many habits can contribute to acid reflux such as consuming caffeine, foods with high fat contents, being pregnant, alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking, etc. This condition equally affects both men and women but is mainly common in those that are at least 40 years of age.

The following are only a few of the typical symptoms associated with this condition. These symptoms may also not occur in every single case of those suffering from the painful effects of this condition.

1. Heartburn - When there is a burning sensation in the esophagus that may be painful to experience, this is known as heartburn which is normally associated with this condition. This pain and discomfort usually starts from the chest and works its way up to the neck and/or throat. This condition is usually experienced at night.

2. Vomiting and Nausea is also associated with this condition if it occurs for a few weeks. The nausea and vomiting may even occur as frequently as once a day.

3. Dyspepsia is another symptom and it involves a great deal of pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen in addition to experiencing stomach fullness and/or nausea after eating.

4. Regurgitation may also be associated with acid reflux disease.

These are only a few symptoms of this disease and there are many medications available over the counter or by prescription that can alleviate the condition. Prevention is also one of the best ways to treat this condition and this may involve making significant lifestyle changes including but not limited to making diet changes.

This condition can last for many months if not treated quickly and with the right medication or remedies. When symptoms of acid reflux recur, repetitive medication to treat the condition may be required.
