Your capacity to use and comprehend English is vital for your success at college. The TOEFL exam measures your college level English abilities. More than 6,000 colleges, government organizations, and companies recognize TOEFL test scores worldwide. The TOEFL Test serves a similar function to other standardized tests (such as SAT and ACT Exams) in that they are used by colleges and universities as a factor in admissions. Different universities place varying levels of weight on standardized tests, such as the TOEFL, and use them along with other elements such as GPA, class rank, community service, recommendations and extracurricular activities.

The TOEFL test is given in two formats: the TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT) and the TOEFL Paper-based Test (PBT). The TOEFL test format will likely be based upon your TOEFL test center. There are currently upwards of 4,300 TOEFL test locations worldwide.

There are four areas that the TOEFL iBT concentrates on. These areas (reading, listening, speaking and writing) will test your English aptitude. The TOEFL test focuses on speech used in an educational, higher-learning setting. You are given four hours to complete the TOEFL iBT test.

The TOEFL iBT test scores span from 0 to 120. The four sections (reading, listening, speaking and writing) are each given scores over a scale from 0 to 30. These sub scores are then added together for the full score. The scoring is automatic for the parts on reading and listening. Each of the six tasks within the speaking section has an initial score of 0 to 4 which is then changed to the 0 to 30 scale. Certified test scorers will grade your answers based on how well you develop your area and deliver your response in English. Similarly, the two writing section tasks each have an initial score of 0 to 5 which is then changed to the 0 to 30 scale. The trained examination scorers assess your responses based on organization, grammar, vocabulary and general quality.

The TOEFL test scores on the Paper-based (PBT) test vary from 310 to 677. The span of test scores is between 31 and 68 for the structure/written expression and listening comprehension portions. The reading comprehension portion is graded on a range of 31 to 67. The raw scores for each segment are then modified to the TOEFL exam scale range of 310 to 677.
