Accounting For A 501c3 - Hiring Help

By:

Because a 501c3 nonprofit is still in essence a business and must act as such, accounting is a vital part of the way any nonprofit functions. The owner, board members and leaders of the nonprofit will rarely have the experience and time to commit to accounting matters, so hiring outside help is often necessary. It doesn't have to be a difficult choice, however, with the right questions to ask and knowing what to look for.

Work to Do

Though you may not be an expert in accounting or even close, it is important to get an idea of what is required for your nonprofit in terms of money matters. This will help you understand if an accountant is qualified for your needs. Another option to researching this part of the decision is that many accountants specialize in a particular field - investments, real estate, nonprofit. Make sure to choose one that can handle the field in which you've chosen to start a nonprofit.

Interviews

Interviewing potential choices for the accounting portion of your nonprofit can be stressful on both you and the applicants, so make things as easy as possible. One thing you don't want to do is shy away from the difficult questions, but by creating some semblance of a rapport with your potentials before the interview begins you can help ease the tension and make it more comfortable for the applicant to prove to you why they deserve to work for your nonprofit organization.

Making a Choice

The final choice is a big deal - let's face it, your accounting department keeps your business running and essentially allows you to keep doing the good your nonprofit is aiming to do. Checking references and basing your choice on both their credentials and how you feel about them professionally is a good idea, since you alone know what your nonprofit needs in terms of an accounting professional. Drawing a name out of a hat won't cut it here, you need to really focus and choose based on what is best for your 501c3, not necessarily just who seems to be.

Accounting is somewhat Greek to someone who is not versed in the terminology and doesn't understand what it entails, which is why you're hiring a professional. Don't drive yourself crazy trying to learn how to do it yourself, but rather budget out a considerable amount of money to ensure your accounts and nonprofit in general are in good hands financially.
