The phrase
get a real job is often said to people following their dreams but getting nowhere by people who have careers and are going somewhere with it. You could have heard it from the television, from a movie, from your neighbor next door, or overhearing it from total strangers. This particular phrase connotes the ever durable wall between men of higher education and men of vision and wisdom.
To tell you the truth, if I am choose a side, I will most probably choose the free enterprise side even before I knew that this field exists. When someone is on the road to a higher education, he is praised, complimented, and looked up to by society. Someone climbing the ladder of the free enterprise upper echelon on the other hand is seen as a mere opportunist salesperson; but when they reach the top, the latter gets more honor, power, fame, and wealth.
This misunderstanding is brought about by the mentality of the common population. It is human nature to be afraid and to let someone test the ground first if it is stable before you put your feet on it. In other words, most of us need assurance that we are safe. In this case, being financially safe. That is why getting a job is the first thing that comes to our mind if we want to make money. For some, it is the only way to make money.
It is a mistake to say that one of the two is the better thing to do since we each have our own interests and skills. What would it look like if everyone thinks the same? Imagine a world where all individuals only knows how to make money by getting a job. Who would give them their jobs? Imagine a world where all people have their minds on free enterprise and they only know how to make money by starting a business. Who will work for them for their businesses to run?
You may have said
get a real job to someone before but havent you thought that that guy could possibly give hundreds or even thousands of jobs in the future? The bottom line is that the academics need the people from free enterprise so that they can monetize what they have learned as well as the skills that they have acquired. The same thing goes with the people from free enterprise. They need these academics to start, run, and expand their businesses.
