How To Avoid Low Humidity Damage During Winter
by Terry Williams

Educating yourself on how to avoid low humidity damage during winter to your home and yourself will make a great difference. Your personal level of comfort will go up and your home and possessions will remain in good condition for years longer. You owe it to yourself and your family to uncover the facts of this matter.

Most people think 'dehumidifier' when the subject of indoor air moisture content comes up. It is true that too much dampness in the home environment leads to mold infestation, with resulting odors, allergic reactions, sinus problems, and other symptoms of ill health. This is a problem that your Toledo air conditioning contractor can help you with for summer. However, many of these same people do not realize that they do not have to live with winter symptoms of dry skin, dry eyes, and frequent illness due to dry sinuses either.

The problem is that cold air does not hold much moisture. When it is brought into your house and heated, the relative humidity (which measures the amount of actual water vapor in the air as opposed to its maximum capacity to hold vapor at the given temperature) is very low. While a comfortable humidity level is thirty-five to forty percent, winter air may hold as little as four percent as it circulates through your home.

Indoor environments should ideally have thirty-five to forty percent humidity. Guitars are said to do best at forty-five percent. Everything from wallpaper and paint to wooden floors and furniture, door and window frames, and wall trim will react to the amount of moisture in the air.

If you are living in a home - or workplace - that is too low in water vapor, you will have defeats all the moisturizers you slather on. If you doubt this, just take a hot shower and then omit the usual body lotion and face cream. You will feel like a cactus in half an hour! If you wake up with a dry throat and mouth, feel like your nose is encrusted, or your lips are about to crack, you have low moisture conditions.

You may see signs of this in your home as well. Do the cracks between boards seem to be getting larger, while the paint on woodwork is developing cracks and the wallpaper is coming off the wall? Does the dust seem to be collecting more rapidly. Sometimes people put this down to the effects of a heat pump, but it is a fact that stuff blows around more freely in overly arid conditions.

You probably have low indoor air moisture, below twenty percent or even lower. Your best bet is to humidify the air all around you. You can boil water on the stove or set portable units around that you fill and clean often to improve the quality of your home atmosphere. These units make less noise than they used to and can make a difference in the rooms where they are placed.

However, your best solution may be a whole-house humidifier that works in conjunction with your furnace. You'll need to call your Toledo HVAC contractor for this. There will be no need to fill the unit or set the controls manually, as the operation will be as automatic as the rest of your heating system. Your whole house will be protected, not just certain rooms. There are many professional listed online, some who call themselves 'comfort specialists', who can tell you how to avoid low humidity damage to your home, its furnishings, and its occupants.
