About The New Yahoo Mail And Outlook 2010 - Do They Work Together?

By:

As you know, there's a new version of Yahoo Mail out there. People are asking if they can still get Yahoo Mail and Outlook 2010 working together, or will this affect their existing connection. Here's some background on the situation, and what we found when we tested the Yahoo Outlook 2010 connection using the new Yahoo Mail.

Despite reports that social media sites are going to replace email as the way we communicate online, the number of email users continues to grow. The big three webmail service providers, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Google are in a fierce battle for your email.

This means that they are all working on upgrading their systems, adding features like more storage and cleaner interfaces. For its part, Yahoo has been pushing out their new version of Yahoo Mail.

This new version has lots to recommend it, but we had to wonder whether you would still be able to connect this new version with Outlook 2010, and if doing so would require people with existing connections to change anything.

So we decided to test it for ourselves.

We did two tests. We upgraded an existing Yahoo Mail Plus account that was already connected to Outlook 2010. And we created a brand new account and connected that to Outlook 2010 from scratch. Then we fired up Outlook, sent a bunch of test messages and watched what happened.

What did we find? We found that connecting the new version to Outlook 2010 worked perfectly using our existing procedures. We also found that switching the existing Yahoo account to the new version (or back and forth over and over) had no effect on the connection either.

In other words, when you set up a Yahoo Outlook 2010 connection using our standard procedures, upgrading to the new version of Yahoo Mail has no effect on that connection. You can set up the connection without worrying that it will become obsolete as soon as you upgrade to the new version of Yahoo Mail, or that the instructions you'll find linked below won't work for you.

Now that we have that worry out of the way, let's talk about what it does take to connect your new (or old) style Yahoo Mail account to Outlook 2010. First and foremost, you need to upgrade your Yahoo account to a premium Yahoo account. This is true whether you are using the new version of Yahoo Mail or the old version.

Yahoo requires that you use a premium account (Yahoo Mail Plus or Yahoo Business Mail) if you want to make a connection to Outlook 2010 or any similar mail program. For most everyone, a Yahoo Mail Plus account will do the trick just fine.

Why Yahoo has this requirement isn't clear, but it doesn't take much work to convert your existing Yahoo Mail account into a Mail Plus account. You won't have to change your email address or anything.

Upgrading your account is easy (the link below tells you how). Even setting up the Yahoo Outlook connection itself is straightforward, but like most things in the computer world, the details can change over time.

What I'm trying to tell you is that you'll want to go online to get up-to-date instructions for configuring Outlook 2010 for a Yahoo connection. What you need is a clear, step-by-step set of instructions that walk you through the entire process, from upgrading to Yahoo Mail Plus account through making Outlook 2010 and Yahoo mail play together smoothly. The link below will take you there.
