About Liposuction: An Overview For Potential Patients

By:

Liposuction is a popular surgery, especially among women. Many people do not understand that liposuction has certain limitations and cannot make a heavy person into a thin one. Instead, the main goal of the liposuction procedure is to remove stubborn pockets of fat that will not go away with diet and exercise.

To be a candidate for liposuction, it is important to be at least near average weight. You need to be in generally good health and have good elasticity left in your skin. You do not have to be any certain age, but the surgery may work better for younger people in many cases.

There are two basic types of liposuction surgery. One is tumescent liposuction and the other is ultrasound-assisted liposuction. In tumescent liposuction, a solution containing saline, epinephrine, and painkillers is injected into the fatty deposits first. This will begin to dissolve the fat, after which the surgeon can suction it away. In ultrasound-assisted liposuction, the fat is dissolved by means of ultrasound effect.

Whether you have the surgery in a hospital, have general anesthesia, or stay the night in the hospital, depends in large part on how much fat is to be removed. One of the main liposuction risks for complications happens when too much fat is removed too quickly. If your plastic surgeon is reputable, he or she will stress the importance of limits to the amount of fat taken at a time. Other risks include infection and a discoloration of the skin where the liposuction was performed.

Liposuction recovery is different for each person. Normally, patients can go back to work after a few days, and healing is complete in a few weeks. The swelling and bruising that may occur will go away in that time. Liposuction does its job well for the area treated. However, if you do not eat and exercise correctly you may gain weight elsewhere. The most important thing about liposuction surgery is to find a qualified surgeon and to have realistic expectations.
