About Claiming Emergency Tax Back

By:

Now, if there are two things that seem to disturb a lot of UK taxpayers, then they are the issue of emergency tax and the issue of claiming the tax back. Each of these things on it's own can be a real nightmare. When these two things come together, It actually can be extremely disappointing. In this article, we are going to look at how you can claim emergency tax, and how you can determine whether you are eligible for a tax refund if at all you were taxed under the emergency tax code.

One thing that you need to know is that unlike what a lot of people think, not everyone who is taxed under this code is eligible for a tax refund. For example, assume that you re one person but who has two jobs. All your tax free allowance is already received under the first job. Immediately you come to the second job, you can be quite sure that you will not receive any tax-free personal allowance on this second job.

One thing that you however need to understand is that if however you were placed under the emergency tax code so that you end up overpaying your taxes, the proper thing to do is to make a claim so that you can be refunded the money. When filing the tax returns, it's critical to remember that there is a deadline and that you should file your return before the date arrives.

The Process

Now, you just can't go to the rooftops and shout at the top of your voice that the government should refund you the money that you had overpaid. There is a process of doing the whole thing. First, the important thing to remember is that there is a deadline of the 6th of April. You are allowed to make your previous year's claim by this time. In order to make this application, you will need to have the form P60, which will be provided to you by the employer on condition that you worked for him till the last day of the tax year.

If it happened that you left your job before the year was over, you need to understand the fact that you will be given a form P45. This form will have details on the amount of taxes that you've already paid during the year. From the amount of money that you've already paid, it will then be possible to know what your tax refund should be.
