About Cancer Treatment And Clinical Trials

By:

Cancer treatment varies due to the type of cancer, age and health of the patient and the type of treatment offered by the facility. Most of all, it depends on the doctor and their experties. Often times, the doctors may not have confidence in cancer treatment if they did not have much real experience. Being better versed in one cancer treatment over another does not make that doctor a bad doctor or necessarily better than other doctors. Each medical professional has their particular area of interest and expertise. If you are under cancer treatment and your doctor does not deal with a treatment you would prefer, ask for a referral. And ask whether another type of treatment might be more effective. Most doctors will be glad to offer a referral to another physician for cancer treatment, which may be better to you.

Cancer actually refers to a class of diseases and there is no universal cure for all cancers. Each type of cancer has its own features and usually one cancer treatment works better for one kind of cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are the most common types of cancer treatment, followed by monoclonal antibody therapy and immunotherapy. The purpose of cancer treatment is to remove cancer without damaging to other parts of the body. However, no matter what cancer treatment you choose, it always causes some side effects. Chemotherapy and radiation can also cause damage to normal and healthy tissue by the toxicity of the treatment. With surgery, there is the chance the cancer will invade adjacent tissue or spread to distant sites by metastasis.

Clinical trials are an important aspect in the research of new and improved cancer treatment. The ultimate goal of such studies is to find better ways to treat patients with fewer side effects and less damage to healthy tissue in the process. Clinical studies include the testing of cancer treatment such as new medication, new approaches to radiation, chemotherapy and surgery and combinations of the three. It is also the last stage of the research process. By this time the cancer treatment has been studied and researched and has also seen positive results in tests with animals to see how the cancer treatment affects a living being and its effects, harmful or otherwise. However, cancer treatments that work in the laboratory and even on animals may not always work on humans. In order to find out whether the cancer treatments are effective and safe on human beings, experiments are always done on volunteers who have the cancer.

Patients who take part in such cancer treatment studies may be helped by the treatment. The patient receives up to date care and treatment from cancer treatment experts as well as a new treatment being tested or the best available cancer treatment still under study. However, the new treatment may have unknown risk too, although the studies try to put the risk under control. Since it is experimental, it may cause unexpected side effects. However, for patients who are the beneficiary of a successful treatment study, the risks are worth it.
