Abdominoplasty: How Does Pregnancy Affect The Procedure?

By:

An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a cosmetic procedure in which excess skin and fatty pockets are removed in the abdominal area. A horizontal incision is made across the pubic area, then vertical up to the navel and finally around the navel. The skin is separated from the muscle and tissue, pulled taut and the excess is cut off and the belly button is repositioned.

While in the abdomen, the surgeon also shortens the abdominal muscles that have been stretched to extremes. If necessary, liposuction is used to enhance the slimming results around the tummy, hips and waist. This unruly sagging skin is a result of extreme weight loss or pregnancy.

Prior to abdominoplasty, your plastic surgeon wants you to be stabilized at a weight within at least 20 pounds of your ideal weight. He also strongly recommends you wait until you are finished having children. After hearing how the procedure works, the reason for this should be clear. So, what happens if you change your mind or have an oops after abdominoplasty?

Well, it certainly isn't an ideal situation and you will effectively ruin the results of your procedure, like flushing the money you spent down the drain. But, it is not an irrevocable situation. The skin will stretch out again and, because skin has been removed before, the possibility of stretch marks is great.

Now, the surgeon could possibly use the same incision site and get rid of most of the stretch marks with a second procedure. But, if you want to achieve the same results as before, that means you are subjecting yourself to the risks of surgery as well as committing to the same recovery time as before. Oh, and don't forget the cost. There are no discounts for a second tummy tuck.

For your original procedure and the after-pregnancy abdominoplasty, it is important that you choose the right plastic surgeon. He should be licensed, board certified and experienced in performing this surgery. If you have had a previous tummy tuck, be sure to tell him during your consultation. It may have an effect on his approach to the next surgery. In the hands of an experienced and talented plastic surgeon, you should be able to achieve a flatter smoother tummy again.

While it doesn't mean the world is over if you do get pregnant after your tummy tuck, it really is better to make sure you don't so you can maintain the best results possible and avoid additional surgery. So, be absolutely sure you are finished having children and take measures to ensure this if you have to. It really is to your benefit and your body's to not have to go through the procedure all over again.
