Abcs Of Signal Generators

By:

Large industrial facilities in India use extensive and complex electronic equipments for production and manufacturing processes. Each of these expensive gadgets needs to be electronically measured to test and maintain it properly. To ensure accurate measurement, you need to invest in the right kind of signal generator.

Function
It is likely that you would immediately think of an oscilloscope or logic analyzer when you think about electronic measurement. However, these can only perform if they receive a signal that is compatible with their programming. This is where generators for signals come into the picture.

These generators act as a stimulus for measurement. Firstly, they input the varying amplitudes of the device into their systems. Next, they give out certain electronic signals as an output in the measurement instrument. Thus, they help you to gauge the performance of the equipment and measure its electronic variations.

Types

Signal generators are divided into two broad categories, depending on their uses and magnitude of usage. Each of these is suitable for specific applications.

Mixed Signal Generators: Designed for the output of analog waveforms like sines and triangles, these generators have features like frequency control and amplitude and DC offset management, among others.

Most popular generators have digital output these days, which use the binary system. But there are some applications that specifically work with the analog system. They are also commonly referred to as arbitrary waveform or function generators.

Logic Signal Generators: These generators are primarily used for digital signals that require a continuous stream of binary numbers. Hence, they are often known as digital pattern generators. Typically, they produce logic-type signals in binary numbers. They are mainly used for validation and testing of machinery.

Applications

Currently the signal measurement instruments industry in India is booming. Devices like scopemeters and spectrum analyzers are in demand. Correspondingly, the demand for mixed and logic generators is also growing. These generators have varied applications across domestic and industrial sectors. They fall into three major types:

Verification: While developing a wireless device, it is essential to simulate baseband I&Q signals, which is done with the help of these generators.

Characterization: These generators are also extensively used for testing the highly popular digital-to-analog converters for their capacity of monotonicity, distortion and linearity.

Stress Test: Using advanced generators, the user can calculate the limit of stress on their devices when combined with impairments, and especially estimate the timing violations and jitter.

The right combination of stimulus and measurement instruments can work wonderfully with any kind of machinery in India, thus ensuring smooth functioning of your facility.
