Document redaction comes into handy especially in matters of governmental, legal and national nature where the autonomy, honor and safety of the law are in question. Document redaction is also useful in communication in businesses and scientific groups where sensitive information being conveyed must be protected.
When sensitizing documents and hiding confidential information is the need of the hour, redaction is an indispensable practice. If one needs to secure information in electronic documents, such as PDF documents, the redaction process should be learnt perfectly so as to avoid any mistakes. Several redaction software programs, electronic redaction processes and redaction tool options can be used for concealing data in electronic form.

To start out, when people try to redact PDF documents they commit the common error of just trying to cover the information by changing the background tone of the file or covering the specific text with a patch of color. What most people do when they're attempting document redaction to sanitize PDF files is that they highlight the text they want to hide and convert the background color of the selected text to the same color as the text itself. The thing that many people fail to understand is that just highlighting the text again brings it up in contrast and makes it visible! Another easy way to undo the document redaction is to copy-paste the hidden text into a new document, retaining the new document's settings, and simply undoing the "blanking out" of the source document. By doing this one can easily see the text that was otherwise meant to be hidden.

Now when it comes to data redaction for PDF files, there is a specific redaction software that can be used. However, this software is actually not included as a part of the Acrobat PDF program. A little background information on PDF reveals that the Adobe team has, for years since the PDF format was released and as it has become successful, chosen not to introduce a specialized redaction software along with the PDF format.

According to the Adobe team, there was a very restricted market available for the same. But, as the needs of the people changed with time, Adobe decided to work with Appligent, and Appligent was given the task of designing a plug-in that would function as a PDF redaction tool and would also allow for automated redaction, thus speeding up the entire process. In 1996, Appligent Redax, the plug-in redaction tool, was released.
