A Walking Tour Of Japan

By:

When I was in college, part of my major included a study abroad trip to Japan. It would be during spring term, and we would be there studying and traveling for about two months. A friend of mine and I opted to go together, both having lived in the same area there before, and thought it would be fun to see the rest of the county as well as some old friends.

We would fly over with the class a couple of days after my birthday and have the adventure of a lifetime. Not only would we be able to see old friends and visit old hangouts, but we would be able to see parts of the country we never knew existed, and get college credit for it at the same time.

Counting the teacher and his wife, there were ten of us altogether. We started out in Tokyo and visited the important historical and governmental sites there.

From there, we traveled to the north and visited the famous Aizu Wakamatsu castle and the city of Sendai. After that, we returned to Tokyo and then headed all points south.

We had lived in the Kansai area, including Osaka, Nara, and Wakayama, so we were happy to see some old friends there, and then from historic Kyoto we headed to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, stopping at the Himeji castle along the way.

All in all, it was glorious, and I learned more about the country and the culture than I ever could have through classroom study alone.

Anyone who has been to Japan knows that the country has a fantastic public transit system, but by and large, you are going to do a lot of walking to get from one site to another.

The sprawling temples and shrines sometimes cover whole mountainsides, and if you don't have comfortable footwear, you are going to have some serious problems.

Several years later, I took my mother on vacation over there to help her get over the death of my grandfather, and she didn't heed my warning about footwear. She developed a blister on her foot on the way to the train station inside the airport.

Anyone planning such a trip would do well to buy a pair of good comfortable shoes They are comfortable, durable, and designed for the long walk, and if you're planning on visiting Japan, you will definitely be taking some long walks.
