A Tummy Tuck Can Be Just The Start Of Your Journey

If you're considering cosmetic surgery, there's a good chance that you have a specific area of your body that you are hoping to reshape. Because of the many related procedures available, you may actually be able to do more for your image than you initially hope to.

A tummy tuck is one of the most common forms of cosmetic surgery, and is a popular solution for those wanting to flatten their stomachs. What some of these same people may not realize is that it is just one of many options when it comes to reshaping one's body.

An abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is done by removing excess skin and fat cells from the abdominal area and then tightening the underlying muscles to produce a flatter, tighter look. It is most commonly done on patients looking to regain a tighter shape following pregnancy or on those who hope to reduce sagging following significant weight loss.

Depending on the breadth of the surgery, it can take anywhere between one and upwards of five hours to complete. To accomplish the desired results, the surgeon makes an incision across the hip bones just above the pubic region, freeing up the skin around the stomach.

A second incision is then made around the belly button to separate the surrounding tissue from it and allow it to be manipulated. This allows the skin to be pulled back from the abdominal wall so that the underlying muscles can be stretched tighter and secured with sutures. Excess skin is then trimmed and what remains is stretched back over the affected area in a tighter, flatter fashion.

That is often just the beginning when it comes to reshaping the midsection. Other related procedures can help enhance and highlight the positive results of the tummy tuck, and in some cases are necessary to help them appear seamless. These separate procedures are often performed on their own, but at times can be done as part of the same operation.

Liposuction, a procedure that essentially sucks fat out of the human body, is typically used in conjunction with a tummy tuck to help contour the area around the perimeter of where the surgery was performed, thus making it appear natural. It can also be used during the same surgery to help slim the stomach area effectively.

A reduction mammoplasty, otherwise known as a breast reduction, shrinks the breath of the breasts to help them remain proportionate to the size of the patient's body. It works in conjunction with a rhinoplasty to promote an overall contouring of the midsection.

A breast lift, which removes excess tissue and tightens the area around the breasts, is also commonly performed with a rhinoplasty to help produce an overall tightening and reshaping of the midsection.

Whether one views the tummy tuck as the single solution they need or simply the first piece of a larger overall puzzle, the most important thing to consider is that there are many options available during or after the operation that can help achieve the most desirable results.
