A Tummy Tuck As Reconstructive Surgery

By:

People who have lost one hundred pounds or more, either on their own or through methods such as gastric bypass surgery, may find they have excessive sagging or loose skin. The skin does not always bounce back from the stretched size it was before the weight loss. There are surgeries to remove excess skin from behind the arms, under the neck, from the thighs and buttocks and from the abdomen.

A tummy tuck is used for the abdominal area to remove large flaps of skin and other tissue that can interfere proper hygiene. This procedure is used because it can be covered by health insurance, either all or a portion thereof. The reason it may be covered is because it maintains a certain health standard and follows a medically required procedure. This surgery is often the final step for people who have lost weight for health reasons on the advise of a physician.

The basic requirement for this type of surgery is that the patient must be generally healthy, have maintained their weight for at least six months and are disease-free. The surgery produces scarring and the patient should be aware and judge for themselves the scarring versus sagging skin. Reconstruction of the abdomen takes longer than a general tummy tuck given the amount of tissue often removed. For that same reason scarring following this operation is also greater and may be difficult if not impossible to conceal in a bathing suit.

Recovery can be extensive, due to the size of the incisions that must be made in the body. A compression garment is required to be worn for three days and nights to reduce swelling and bruising. Pain medication is prescribed and often times a drain may be inserted to drain fluids. Following post operative instructions is a necessity to a quicker and safer recovery period.

This type of surgery greatly alters the life of those who had been morbidly obese. Surgeons take extra care to make sure these patients do not leave the hospital without detailed instructions on how to deal with any complications that may arise. Usually these situations can be handled over the phone or with a prescription called in to your pharmacist. Sometimes, however, it may require a return trip to the hospital for corrective action. The key to success is being honest with your doctor before surgery and after surgery, being sure to follow post operative instructions and reporting any abnormalities to your doctor following surgery.
