A Trial Lawyer Explains How To Help Your Courtroom Nerves

By:

Some people are scared of spiders, some are scared of snakes, but most people are scared of public speaking and going to court. When you are going to court for a personal injury case, you are there to fight for compensation. The compensation you are fighting for could change your life dramatically, so naturally you are going to be nervous about the outcome. It is your trial lawyer's job to help calm your nerves.

If it is your first time entering a courtroom then you are going to be nervous. Television series have dramatized the courtroom, making it seem like a bigger deal than it is. The best thing you can do if you are beginning to feel nervous or think that you might be uncomfortable in court, is to tell your trial lawyer. They should ask you how you feel and help you prepare, but if not, you need to ask. Always remember that the lawyer is working for you.

As a trial lawyer, I do some things with my clients before cases. Some lawyers do not do these things, but I want to let you know about a couple of them because they can help you feel more comfortable in the courtroom. If you are feeling nervous, ask your lawyer if you can do these things.

The first thing I do with my clients is to show them video of the court process. This allows the client to see the process in the courtroom. Knowing what is going to happen helps calm the nerves. The unexpected is one the biggest fears when going to court. These videos help you to get the dramatized courtroom out of your head and to have a basic understanding of what is to come.

The second thing that I do is take my clients into the courtroom. Seeing the process on video is great, but opening the door and physically being in the room is the key. I usually do this on bigger cases or if a client is really nervous, but if you think it will help you, ask your lawyer. Make sure to have your trial lawyer show you your seat, where the judge will enter and where other key people will sit.

If you are worried about going to court, know that your trail lawyer will be by your side. If you are feeling nervous, make sure to let your lawyer know and ask him if you can do some of the above-mentioned things.
