A Transportation Atlas

By:

As a tourist, I am always eager to immerse myself in the culture of the places I visit. I want to eat their food, visit their galleries, walk their streets and speak their language. What I've always found quite interesting is the way people putt around their city centres. London has its famous black cabs, New York City, its yellow ones. Europeans love their vespas, while South East Asians tend to get around by rickshaw.

England: London's Black Cab

The black cabs that flood London's streets have become an iconic image of the city. In addition to their ample leg room, and sleak exterior, the best part about London's black cabs are their drivers. These guys know absolutely every corner of the massive, winding city. Wherever you want to go, they will get you there- no problem, no map required.

India: Motor Rickshaw

One of the most fun parts about getting around India's chaotic cities is riding in their motor rickshaws. This method of travel is fast, low on gas, and cheap. If you're up for a bargain, India's rickshaw drivers will always give you one. With so many drivers to choose from, there's no reason why you shouldn't get a price you're happy with.

Thailand: Tuk Tuks

Thailand's tuk tuks tend to be wheeled carriages rigged to the back of a motorcycle. The seats are padded, plastic benches, that sometimes have a bit of fun sparkle to them. Tuk tuks and rickshaws are really the best way to travel in congested cities like Bangkok and New Delhi (India) where the amount of traffic is enough to make your head spin.

Egypt: Camels

Okay, admittedly this is an ancient method of travel. Well in some parts of the world it is, but if you're visiting countries in the desert, travelling by camel isn't uncommon. Camels are ideal for desert travel because they are strong enough to carry humans and cargo, and they go a long time/distance without water.

Italy: Vespas

Vespas aren't unique to Italy, but they are certainly ridden there a lot- there and most other European countries. These little (much safer) motor bikes are a great way to get around town. They are easy to park, low on gas, and super cool. Put any young good looking guy on a vespa and you've got yourself a Hollywood movie poster!

Another fun way to see a new city is to fly over it. And the best way to do that is in a hot air balloon!
