A Tough Way With Wood: Petrol Chainsaws

A Tough Way With Wood: Petrol Chainsaws

By:

Tackling large trees, whether they are in your own garden, a park or farm, is not a task for small, ineffective tools its a job for the biggest, toughest tool you can find. Once a job for an axe man, felling trees, clearing forest, taking off branches and cutting up the fallen timber is made light work since the introduction of the petrol chainsaw in the early 20th century.

Chainsaws were in use as early as 1830, when a primitive hand-turned version was used for cutting bone. The very first gasoline-powered one was manufactured in 1927 by the Hamburg Company of Emil Lerp, and a couple of years later by Joseph Cox and Andreas Stihl the latters name and the company he founded are still associated with the manufacture of these tools. These early models were so heavy that they needed two men to operate them, and must have been little improvement on using a manual axe to fell a tree - some actually required wheels because of their weight. However, after World War II better designs and the introduction of aluminum reduced the weight of petrol chainsaws so that they could be carried and operated by one man. They have grown so safe and user-friendly that they have become the basic tool for use in forestry, and now come in a range of sizes suitable for all uses, from small garden tasks to lumber-jacking. Although normal chainsaw blades are unsuitable for tackling tree roots, because contact with soil and rocks will dull their blades, it is possible to install cutting chains designed specifically for this job and made of tungsten-carbide which will buzz through the toughest roots and not be harmed by soil and stones. There are even chainsaws specially designed for creating art, such as chainsaw carving, and chainsaws that are tough enough with diamond dust edges - to cut concrete, stone and brick.

Design and manufacture has continued to improve, along with safety measures, making petrol chainsaws far safer to operate, with chain break systems, anti-vibration features and better chain design. These features must have saved many lives over the years.
