A Tough Love Approach To Health And Fitness

Yesterday at the grocery store, I came across a child, who was about 8-years-old. She was lying on the ground flailing her arms and legs yelling "I want a chocolate bar." I could have predicted the outcome. The child continued to scream until mom place a chocolate bar within the cart. The crying ceased instantly.

As they passed, I took note of the contents of the grocery cart - Coco Puffs cereal, soda, three bulk bags of potato chips, chocolate coated granola bars, macaroni & cheese, hot dogs...you get the drift. Attempt as I may I couldn't facilitate but feel scared for that child's future.

You see, a very long time ago I used to be that obese little girl. I was sad with my body, however I dulled the pain by eating - chips, chocolate bars, hotdogs. I threw tantrums as a result of I knew my mother did not have the patience and would just give me what I wanted.

By the age of 12 I used to be four-foot, 11-inches and one hundred thirty five-pounds. My doctor place me on a restrictive diet. But, I might steal cash from my folks to shop for candy. It did not make sense to me. I used to be allowed to eat those foods before. Why were punishing me? I hated myself more.

In the first 80's, being a fat child was rare. However in 2006 one in three North American youngsters are overweight. Both oldsters possible have full time jobs, which suggests that less time for healthy meals and exercise. Fast food and activities have taken over the family roost.

I'm sorry I have to lay this responsibility on the oldsters, but kids only follow what you preach. If they see you eating poorly; they'll follow suit.

o Justify the distinction between health food selections and non-healthy food choices.
o Sit down and compile a weekly grocery lists together with your child.
o Let them come with you to the foodstuff and shop only for the foods on the list.

o It's traditional to shelter our youngsters from ridicule. However if your kid is obese their health is in danger and robust love encouragement is needed, as an example: "honey, you are overweight, however I think in you and I am going to support you as a result of I love you."
o Never use food as a reward. Instead reward them with mini-golfing or baseball.
o Ditch the clean-plate policy. If your kid is full, don't force them to finish.
o Institute an open policy regarding food. Children should be comfortable telling you when they're hungry and not hungry while not fear you may get mad.
o Don't eliminate snacks. It will lead to lying and binge eating outside the home. Instead set up a cheat meal once a week once they're allowed any foods they want.
o Encourage physical activity. It can get them up and out and encourage them to socialize with alternative active kids.
o Never permit eating in front of the TV. This encourages passive eating, and the kid will not target how a lot of they are eating or once they're full.
o Limit TV or video games to one hour per day. The rest of the time, keep them busy with out of doors activities.
