Why Amsterdams Centrum is Worth the Visit

Centrum encapsulates everything Amsterdam has to offer. For example, one of the four palaces which Queen Beatrix of Neverlands uses alternately is the Royal Palace of Amsterdam found at its Centrum. Once closed, the palace is now fully open to serve tourists as of last year for those interested to see where royalty resides. Theres also Bloemenmarkt, considered as the worlds only floating flower market. Tourists will also love the different souvenirs found at the market for affordable rates. Then of course, theres the Van Gogh Museum where the largest collection of the Dutch Painters works are found. Aside from the main museum, Centrum also has many museums hidden in its canals, small museums which are kept by private residences and other small organizations also worth the visit. There is also Anne Franks House down the famous Prisengracht 263 which marks the secret room where she hid with her family. A myriad of shops and restaurants are also strewn all over the place so one can relax after a tiring day going about Centrum.

Touring the Cheese Capital of Holland from Amsterdam

Alkmaar is great for a day tour as its only a few miles outside of its more popular counterpart, Amsterdam. Alkmaar has many interesting sights and sounds to offer the tourist especially since its considered as the cheese capital of Holland. There are different historical museums in the city such as the National Beer Museum, the City Museum of Alkmaar, the Holland Cheese Museum and even a Beatles Museum as John Lennons first guitar seems to have been made here. The cheese market in Waagplein has garnered in most of the visitors in Alkmaar, being its most popular attraction. And its only open from April to September, when the cheeses undergo a weighing ceremony to the delight of the crowds, so its best to plan a trip in those conditions. But the actual buying takes place in the specialized stores surrounding the area. There are also many unique boutiques, shops and cafes which arent found in the more tourist-laden gift shops of Amsterdam. And after hanging out in their cafes, spend more time lazing the day away in their many huge terraces for some insightful people-watching.

Relaxing Stroll at De Plantage, Amsterdam

For those searching for something more contemporary than what places like Centrum and Muiden brings, De Plantage is probably one of the more contemporary escapes Amsterdam has to offer. Found at the Eastern area of Amsterdam, De Plantage is starting to become the hub for many intellectuals, adventurers, adults and even kids. ARCAM or Amsterdam Centre for Architecture is found at De Plantage and offers year-round exhibits which promote futuristic architectural structures. Theres also Artis Zoo, ideal for the kids, being one of the oldest zoos in Europe with a planetarium, aquarium, geological museum, butterfly garden, petting zoo and a research center. Of course, there are still many historical sites such as Rembrandts House, the Dutch Resistance Museum and Tropenmuseum. After all the sightseeing, one can have lunch at Restaurant De Kas, which was a former greenhouse turned dining area, or at Bloem, a former warehouse near Artis Zoo. Really, whichever way you look at De Plantage there are so many stores, museums, cafes, museums and parks to have fun in.

Taking a Road Trip down at Zaanse Schans

Zaanse Schans is a town with an old world charm featuring many important sights in Dutch history and is quite an easy town to take a day trip in, being only 20 minutes away from Amsterdam proper. The town was once an old 17th century industrial village and parts of it still show in its remnants such as the working mills, allowing visitors in on certain days of the week, the cheese factory and the clog workshop. The cheese factory is a great place to go to as it gives out a quiet tour of how cheeses are made and even distributes samples for tourists. Getting there from Amsterdam is easy as you can just take a train going to Koog Zaandjik which takes one to the heart of the town, then its just a 10 minute hike going to Zaanse Schans, or one can also bike going there. Zaanse Schans is best kept as a one day trip and not an overnighter since they only have one accommodation available, the Hotel Sans Pareil. After walking through the town, drop by the Museum Zaans to get some knowledge about how their local customs came to be.
