A Survival Guide For Surfing Trips

A Survival Guide For Surfing Trips

By:

Its the time of year when surfing trips are in full swing, and looking at the weather who can blame you! While the UK submits to howling winds, freezing cold water and some of the worst surfing conditions weve seen in years, the worlds warm water surf spots are settling down for their best time: end of spring, beginning of summer, nowhere near the rainy season yet.

If youre joining the hordes of British surfers going away for a month or two, here are some tips to help you make the most of your adventure. Youll find them useful in the water as well as on land!

If youve never seen reefs on your surfing trips, now is the time to learn that reef boots are your best friends. As, in the event of a reef cut, is lime juice (which is readily available in the tropics of course). Reef boots will stop your feet from sustaining tiny scratches when you hop over the coral and lime juice will take the bacteria and poison out of any scrapes you get if you wipe out or just fall over when you have paddled in for shore.

A reef is a living animal, which can sting (doesnt hurt too much unless its fire coral) and which is covered in bacterial organisms. Even the smallest reef cut can develop a quite serious infection in the humid air of the tropics, which is why sterilising cuts and grazes with lime juice is essential. Any cuts on your surfing trips, try to keep them dry too, stay out of the water for a couple of days to let them heal or youll find they just get bigger and bigger. It is possible for a tiny untreated reef cut, if you go in every day, to turn into a sea blister the size of a pound coin: and that can put you out of the ocean for months. So remember: any blood is equal to a day out of the sea immediately, rather than months out later because you didnt pay it any mind.

On shore in tropical surfing trips, youll probably be experiencing a kind of heat youve never known before. Three things: sun cream, hats and local clothing. Theyll keep you protected and comfortable all day long. Local clothing is cheap to buy, can be bought on the side of the road and will be much better at keeping you cool than even the most expensive branded tropical or surf gear. It also helps ensure that you adhere to local standards of dress (i.e. not exposing more skin than is deemed polite wherever you are in the world).

Take more sun cream with you than you think you will need. Unlike local clothing, buying sun lotion in tropical surfing trips costs more per ounce than gold (at least thats what it feels like). Oh and surf wax is the same. Take plenty and donate what you dont use to the local kids. And have fun.
